EV Tax Credit: New Eligibility Requirements On April 18, 2023, the IRS added battery sourcing requirements for the New Clean Vehicle Credit (Federal Tax Credit), which reduced the number of EV models that qualify. This NPR article lists all of the models that now qualify for either the full ($7500) or partial ($3750) credit, and this US Department of Energy search engine allows you to search for specific models and trim levels.

New Clean Vehicle Tax Credit for EV LEASES As previously reported, EV buyers can potentially receive some or all of the New Clean Vehicle Tax Credit when leasing an EV if the manufacturer’s financing arm agrees to pass it through as a lease incentive. This article by Leasehckr lists all manufacturers that are offering this incentive in May (note: these incentives change monthly).

Chevrolet Bolt Being Discontinued General Motors will be discontinuing the Chevrolet Bolt at the end of this year in favor of models that use its new Ultimium battery platform. The Chevy Bolt is one of few EVs priced under $30,000 that qualifies for the full New Clean Vehicle Tax Credit ($7500), making it one of the most affordable and popular EVs on the market. So if you want to purchase a new Bolt or Bolt EUV, note that 2023 inventory will likely dwindle by October, and plan your purchase accordingly. Affordable Alternatives These two upcoming models will help fill the gap left behind by the Chevy Bolt. Both models will have starting prices of ~$30,000.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV will be a slightly larger compact SUV than the Bolt, with a range of 250-300 miles and options which will include a sunroof, Bose audio system, and head-up display. A limited edition trim will be available starting this Fall, with standard trims following in 2024. The Equinox will be made in North America, which will allow it to qualify for the New Clean Vehicle Tax Credit, provided it meets Federal battery sourcing requirements. Vinfast is a new Vietnamese automobile manufacturer that has already released two EVs this year, with plans to release a third, the VF6 subcompact SUV, later this year. The VF6 will be similar in size to the Chevy Bolt EUV, with attention-drawing V-shaped LED “eyebrows,” a minimalist interior, and an estimated 230 mile range. View the first Vinfast release, the slightly larger VF8 SUV, at this Saturday’s EV Workshop and Expo.
