The Smell of Money Film Screening & Discussion

The Smell of Money Film Screening and Discussion

The gripping documentary "The Smell of Money" asks the question, "Who pays the price for what we want?" A century after her grandfather claimed his freedom from slavery and the family land, Elsie Herring and her North Carolina community fight the world's largest pork corporation for their freedom to enjoy fresh air, clean water, and a life without the stench of manure. The film explores of some of the most important tensions in our modern world: People versus profit; and the battle for environmental and social justice.

This 82-min film is not currently available to stream and is not showing in Bay Area theaters — so don't miss this opportunity.

"The Smell of Money" is jointly presented by Acterra, SolPods, 350 Silicon Valley's Menlo Park Climate Team, and Menlo Spark in partnership with Acterra's Green Team Network. It is part of Acterra's Fall Lecture Series. Discussion including Q&A with the film's writer and co-producer, Jamie Berger, will take place after the screening.

Thank you to outreach partner Palo Alto Humane Society and LinkedIn for sponsorship of Acterra's Green Team Network.

Understanding Food Lost and Waste Lecture

Graphic for Food Waste Lecture

Food that is lost or wasted on its journey from farm to fork creates the potent greenhouse gas methane and results in lost environmental resources, energy, and economic productivity. Reducing food loss and waste represents a very important opportunity to combat the climate crisis while improving food security. Join us for a presentation on Tuesday, October 17, by leading experts in the field Dr. Lisa K. Johnson and Selena Mao, followed by a moderated discussion and Q&A.
