Press Release: Acterra Announces Big Wins for EV Charging for All Coalition

February 14, 2025

Palo Alto, CA — February 14, 2025

Acterra: Action for a Healthy Planet (Acterra), a nonprofit environmental organization, is thrilled to share that 2025 has already proven to be a milestone year for its program, EV Charging for All Coalition (EVCAC). Formerly a joint venture with Plug In America, and stewarded by pioneers in the multifamily charging space, Acterra is honored to announce that we were chosen, as a sub-award of the Rocky Mountain Institute, on the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation award through their “Communities Taking Charge Accelerator”.

If the funding goes through as planned, the award will allow Acterra’s EVCAC, and its bench of advisors and technical experts, to create a suite of complementary codes and standards that encourage the ambitious development of affordable and equitable EV charging infrastructure serving residents of multifamily housing, designed for a wide range of geographies and regulatory environments.

Not only will this award have a significant impact on the EVCAC program locally, it serves as a timely on-ramp for Acterra to remain diligent in its efforts to grow this work on a national scale, at a time when the country needs it the most. As a result, Acterra is proud to support the launch of a new group, led by a small but dedicated group of former Acterra volunteers, to strengthen Acterra’s state and nationwide efforts. This group will align with Acterra and EVCAC’s goals, and add value to the national charging space through consultative expertise. We are excited to see the work grow, and we look forward to partnering in our collective and progressive efforts. Please stay tuned for more information as this independent group gets underway!

Acterra envisions a world where all those in need of EV charging can access affordable electrified transportation at home. Affordable, convenient EV charging should be available to every resident, whether homeowner or renter; urban, suburban or rural; in single- or multi-family housing; high-, moderate- or low-income; and with on- or off-street parking, especially in the communities most burdened by air pollution. Equitable access envisions a future in which all residents can affordably charge EVs and enjoy the environmental and financial benefits; increases EV adoption; and helps all communities achieve ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving a livable climate for all.

By leveraging a diverse coalition representing multiple stakeholders, Acterra’s EVCAC has strengthened California state building codes, programs, and policies to encourage 100% access to affordable and convenient EV charging for all, especially for residents who continue to lack access to the benefits of EVs. Acterra’s EVCAC work has supported countless efforts across the United States– and Acterra commits to seeing both statewide and nationwide efforts continue.
