Yesterday was Juneteenth, a celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, which has significant connections to the ongoing struggle for environmental justice. Historically, communities of color, including Black communities, face disproportionate environmental burdens, including higher exposure to pollutants, reduced access to clean air and water, and higher rates of respiratory and other diseases. Environmental justice efforts aim to address these disparities by ensuring that all communities, regardless of race or economic status, have the same protection from environmental hazards and equal access to decision-making processes. Juneteenth reminds us that the fight for freedom is not only about social and economic justice but also about securing a healthy and sustainable environment for all. Read these articles and resources to learn more about Juneteenth, climate justice efforts, and ways you can get involved: - Read this blog post from Young, Gifted & Green written by a Black woman from Memphis and her experience with environmental justice and how it's tied to racial, economic, and social justice.
- Read about Clean Water Action's work throughout the nation, California, and the Bay Area to provide resources and assistance to historically low-income communities and communities of color.
- With your organization, apply for the Environmental Protection Agency's Community Change Grants Program, funded by the Inflation Reduction Act. This grant will fund community-driven projects that address climate justice challenges and reduce pollution while strengthening and building resilient communities.
- The Green Program (TGP) has their open-source library with climate action resources on racial and sustainability education which includes news articles, interviews, videos, and books you can read or watch.

EV Charging for All Coalition Updates Please take action today to strengthen the state Green Building Code (“CALGreen”) which is currently in a public comment period. Once approved, the 2025 CALGreen Code will create new building standards for EV charging in multifamily housing — and for the first time, 100% of all new units with assigned parking must be provided with at least 1 EV-Ready charging receptacle, directly wired to a resident’s electricity meter for straightforward billing. The EV Charging for All Coalition (EVCAC), joined by many allies, has fought hard for the last three years advocating for these changes and we are excited by the progress made. However, there’s one sticking point — parking lifts in multifamily buildings aren’t subject to the EV charging requirements. EVCAC is calling for the parking lift exception to be removed from the code, so we can close this outdated loophole and promote EV charging for all. How to help? First: Join our letter campaign here to quickly send your “me too” public comment to the California Building Standards Commission. We’ve pre-drafted the message to make things easy (though you can customize if you wish). Comments must be sent no later than July 1, 2024. Second: tell your friends and neighbors. If you’re on social media, please share our LinkedIn, Facebook, X, and Instagram posts. Third: Organizations can also sign onto EVCAC’s detailed comment letter by clicking here. Thank you for speaking up for EV charging equity |
