11 July 2024

Facebook InstagramLinkedInYouTubeTwitter

The start of July has come in hot to California, marked by scorching heat and more than a dozen active fire incidents across the state. The blazes have burned more than 90,000 acres across the state this summer, and are considered particularly active given the still-nascent fire season.

The fire activity observed thus far this year is consistent with the pressures of climate change, which is causing unprecedented heat waves and inconsistent extreme precipitation. These factors are increasing the reach, frequency, impact, and duration of seasonal fires, which are now expected annually in California between May and October. Scientists warn that trends in seasonal fires pose a serious threat to achieving climate targets; California’s wildfires alone emit as much carbon as 2 million cars.

State Updates

We’ve been watching progress on a referendum to repeal SB 1137, an existing law barring oil wells from being sited too close to schools, hospitals and other community centers. The referendum campaign had already received hundreds of millions of dollars in oil industry support, but in late June, the unpopular referendum was suddenly pulled — a big cause for celebration for environmental groups and public health advocates. More good news to share: Full funding for the California Nutrition Incentive Program (CNIP), an umbrella for Market Match, was included in the final California state budget after a coalition of organizations including Acterra activated the delivery of more than 1,150 letters of support to the Governor and Legislators. Preserving nutrition incentives is key to reducing food insecurity for families and also benefits local farmers. Thank you to everyone who supported this effort.

Some of the important climate-related bills that are still alive in the legislature include SB 1374, which reduces barriers to rooftop solar for schools and multifamily housing; SB 1221, which pilots the creation of gas-free neighborhood decarbonization zones; and ACA 16, a constitutional amendment enshrining the right to a . As developments take place we will keep you posted on these.

EV Charging for All Coalition & CALGreen Updates

Thank you to everyone who sent comments regarding CALGreen (the state green building code) to the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) / California Building Standards Commission via Acterra’s tool. Together we were able to collectively send more than 80 public comments supporting EV charging equity before the July 1 deadline. Though the triennial code adoption cycle will soon wind down, we will be looking ahead in coming months to the “intervening code cycle” where we can propose new changes to building code.
