An alarming new study has shown that 58% of Californians lack a disaster kit, and 69% do not have any disaster plans. California continues to be at risk from unpredictable wildfires. New growth of vegetation, grass, and plants due to the rain also poses a significant risk once these fuels become tinder dry, as they can promote rapid fire growth. Evacuating from your home early can mean the difference of life and death. When a wildfire or other disaster strikes, be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice. Having a 5-minute plan with an escape route can get you and your family out and safe. If you need additional time to evacuate or have livestock, you should pack up and leave when the warning is issued and not wait for an evacuation order. - Have an established meeting place.
- Pack an emergency kit with essentials like medicine, important documents, clothes, food, and water.
- Watch for weather reports and Red Flag Warnings.
- If you need to go, get your emergency bags packed and gather your family and pets.
- Most important, don’t wait or hesitate – know when to go.
Visit Firefighters On Your Side for more information on creating a 5-minute plan and being prepared for disaster. |

End-of-Session Legislative Updates It’s September, the time of year when bills that made it through both legislative chambers are waiting for Governor Newsom’s signature. Here’s the key legislation we’re watching. SB 59 - Would authorize the California Air Resources Board to require that EVs in CA are bidirectional — capable of providing grid (or solar panel) energy to the car and returning the car’s stored energy back to the grid/home). Ask Gov. Newsom to sign. SB 1374 - Would restore the ability of schools and multifamily rental properties to utilize power from their solar rooftops. Call Gov. Newsom (916-445-2841, between 9 AM – 5 PM) and use this sample script: “My name is ____. I live in _________. I am calling to ask the Governor to sign SB 1374. We need to make sure that schools and renters have the ability to benefit from solar energy.” AB 1866 - Would make oil companies accountable for the pollution caused by unused (idle) wells by requiring companies to start plugging a greater percentage of their idle wells each year or pay higher fees. Acterra signed on to a coalition letter to Gov. Newsom urging him to sign this bill. Read the letter. Learn about Food Hubs Sourcing sustainable food at a bigger scale means building connections between local producers and consumers. Enter food hubs, which aggregate food from many small farms. Learn all about food hubs and meet new people working on food systems in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Join a special in-person gathering on Wednesday, October 16 from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM at the O’Donohue Family Stanford Educational Farm. RSVP here. |
