Welcome to August with Acterra! This week marks the passage of Indigenous People’s Day. This year’s theme, “Indigenous Peoples: Leaders in Climate Action” has prompted our team at Acterra to think about the contributions Indigenous communities have made as stewards of the San Francisco Bay ecosystems. The Ohlone are the predominant Indigenous group in the Bay Area, with more than 18,500 members. The Tribe now leads climate resilience, food sovereignty, and ecological justice projects throughout the region, including the Native Stewardship Corps, Cafe Ohlone, and a drought resiliency and water conservation program in San Mateo. These initiatives demonstrate the continued leadership of Indigenous communities in the Bay Area and throughout the world in drawing upon their ancestral knowledge systems, cultural beliefs, and sustainable lifeways to accelerate climate policy and action. |

World Research Institute (WRI) Working Paper |
In partnership with SeededGround, World Research Institute's Electric School Bus Initiative has published a new working paper, Next stop, access! An exploratory paper on disability rights and justice throughout the transition to electric school buses! The Electric School Bus Initiative is committed to ensuring an equitable transition to electric school buses, which must involve prioritizing the needs of students and adults with disabilities and ensuring that these communities are among the first to experience the benefits of clean transportation. Their working paper is powered by diverse perspectives and priorities from across communities of disability, transportation and environmental justice. With a focus on disability rights and justice, this paper examines the ways students and adults with disabilities are impacted by the electrification of school buses and shares their recommendations for designing a transition that achieves equity and accessibility. Accompanying this working paper is a new video giving a quick overview of the importance of accessibility in the transition to electric school buses, and an article on WRI’s Insights blog that highlights key components of the working paper. |

EPA Hearing on Advanced Clean Fleets: Comments Needed The federal EPA is holding a very consequential hearing on Wednesday, August 14, to hear comments on whether to let California implement the Advanced Clean Fleets (ACF) rule it approved in 2023. Unless the EPA grants a waiver for California to exceed federal Clean Air Act standards, California cannot begin implementing this important rule that will phase out diesel commercial truck fleets. Take action today: Please submit a comment (suggestions for how to write it are here) urging the EPA to grant California a waiver to implement the ACF rule. Submit your comment and please email a copy. Thank you for supporting the transition to zero emission vehicles. Air Quality and Appliances Members of the public can attend, and comment at, an upcoming Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) Implementation Working Group meeting on Zero NOx Appliance Rules on Tuesday, August 20 from 1 - 4 pm. Once the rules take effect, space- and water-heating appliances sold in BAAQMD’s area must satisfy certain air quality standards (which fossil fuel-burning appliances would not meet). Please speak up in favor of better air quality and building electrification! Find background on these rules here or review our Code Red video from earlier this year. Electrify California’s Industry Roughly a quarter of California’s greenhouse gas emissions come from industrial processes. However, the question of how to decarbonize industry throughout the state has been low-priority. A new EarthJustice campaign is motivating the state legislature to take action to electrify California’s factories and manufacturing. Learn more City of Berkeley Ballot Measure Update It’s now an official ballot measure: Large buildings (more than 15,000 square feet) which tend to emit more greenhouse gases will have to pay a fee for polluting. That’s the gist of a decarbonization strategy that will go before the city’s voters on Election Day this November. Learn more |
