August is National Make-A-Will Month and this year we have teamed up with FreeWill, a user-friendly tool that makes the process of creating a will both simple and free. It’s a fantastic resource that's already helped over a million people ensure their wishes are honored. While going through the process, if you would like to cement your legacy with Acterra even further, you can consider including a gift to fight climate change in your plans. Say NO to Artificial Turf with 350 Silicon Valley |
|
|
| On August 27, elected officials within Santa Clara County are voting on banning artificial turf. - Santa Clara County Supervisors will vote on a ban applying to county-owned land with possible exceptions for the soccer fields at the Fairgrounds
- Sunnyvale City Council will vote on a proposed ban applying to all city-owned land.
Artificial turf has been shown to be hot, short-lived, non-recyclable, water wasting, and full of PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) known as “forever chemicals” because they accumulate in the environment and living tissue and have been linked to serious health effects, including cancer. There is strong opposition to the ban by various groups, including the Artificial Turf industry itself. Join 350 Silicon Valley and voice your support for the bans. |

Building Electrification Update |
As many Bay Area cities continue reevaluate reach codes promoting electrification in new construction, Acterra and fellow decarbonization advocates are cheering the August 20 decision by Campbell City Council to move forward an Air Quality ordinance which would prohibit nitrous oxide (or NOx) emissions from equipment being installed in any newly constructed building or major rebuild. This ordinance applies to water heaters, furnaces, ovens/ranges, and clothes dryers but does not apply to outdoor grills or portable heaters. The idea was initially discussed during a July 24 public meeting hosted by City of Campbell staff which was attended by community members and several organizations (including Acterra) who spoke in favor of the measure. The ordinance will receive a second hearing on September 3, 2024. If approved by Council, the ordinance would take effect in October 2024. |
