How it work

Your Guide to the Program

You need a residential address within Ava Community Energy service territory (see the FAQ below). You’ll select whatever site you’d like to pick up from – we have host sites all over Alameda County, each open several days per week, so you can pick the site that works best for you. Acterra will notify you when your cooktop is ready for pickup; you’ll have one week to pick it up from the distribution site, and it will be due back to the site after two weeks!

What is its service territory?

Currently Ava Community Energy serves the following cities: Albany, Berkeley, Dublin, Emeryville, Fremont, Hayward, Livermore, Newark, Oakland, Piedmont, Pleasanton, San Leandro, Tracy, and Union City. They also serve the unincorporated areas of Alameda County (including Ashland, Castro Valley, Cherryland, Fairview, San Lorenzo, and Sunol). My pickup location is a library. Do I need a library card?

No. You can pick up the kit from the library’s circulation desk without a library card.

How long is the loan period?

Once notified, you have one week to pick up the cooktop, and two weeks to bring it back. For example, if you are notified that a cooktop is ready on January 1st, you must pick it up by the end of the day on January 8th, and return it by the end of the day on January 29th.

Can I use the cooktop if I have a pacemaker?

If you have a pacemaker, you should consult your doctor before directly using an induction cooktop or range, as it’s possible for the magnetic fields to interfere with the pacemaker. However, you can safely be in the same room as someone using the cooktop – the magnetic fields are only strong in the area directly around the cooktop.

Any special instructions for cleaning the cooktop or the pan?

The cooktop can be wiped down to clean it.

The saute pan and lid included in the standard kit should be cleaned with soapy water; if food is stuck, please soak it in hot water and soap and clean it with a sponge. Do not use steel wool.

The wok included in the wok kit can be cleaned by wiping it out and with a sponge and soap. If you are comfortable with seasoning a wok, we welcome you to season the wok as you use it and before you return it.
