Food Systems and San Quentin
A dignity- and human-centered approach to institutional food means raising the bar for food quality. As part of collaborative work, Acterra is exploring a variety of equity initiatives at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center focused on the principle that everyone deserves adequate healthy, affordable food as well as economic opportunity.
Support our coalition
Under the current prison labor system, incarcerated workers are paid little or nothing. Help us advocate for policy to open up new opportunities for systems-impacted individuals. Assembly Bill 746 (2025-2026) would create prison cooperatives — a successful strategy employed in countries around the world — to reduce recidivism, allow people to gain marketable skills, earn income, and become active, productive taxpayers while incarcerated. Acterra is helping build a coalition called the Let Us Contribute Initiative (LUCI), partnering with TheSELC, Earth Equity, Romero Institute, Arizmendi Association, Impact Justice, and other allies.

Food is life. Let's improve the quality and sustainability of institutional food.
Acterra is helping build a better food future at San Quentin through a diverse range of initiatives including access education.
Food Is Medicine
Introducing more fresh produce into prison diets can improve health outcomes and lower the risk of chronic conditions. An initial pilot study is being developed in collaboration with staff at San Quentin and diverse partners in the food system space.
Community Building
Food is a vital social connector. Acterra is working with partners inside San Quentin to enhance future community events with plant-based food tastings and learnings.
Education
Acterra is partnering with Earth Equity, Collective REMAKE, The SELC, and Repaired Nations to provide meaningful curriculum for inmates at San Quentin in areas like sustainable food systems, agricultural careers, and food cooperatives.
