Founded in 1990, the Business Environmental Awards is dedicated to recognizing outstanding environmental achievements in the Bay Area business community. The program's goals include celebrating the accomplishments of businesses with innovative sustainable programs; recognizing the leaders in the industry; and providing an educational forum that increases awareness and motivates all companies to adopt sustainable business practices.
Since its inception, the program has awarded over 120 businesses, government, academic and nonprofit organizations for excelling in environmental leadership and making improvements that drastically reduce their environmental impact. Organizations in the six Bay Area counties of Alameda, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz are eligible to apply for awards in six categories: Acterra Award for Sustainability; Commute and Transportation; Environmental Enterprise; Environmental and Sustainability Education; Pollution Prevention/Resource Conservation, and Sustainable Built Environment. Each application is reviewed and evaluated by teams of environmental professionals volunteering their time as judges.

The Business Environmental Awards is a program of Acterra, whose mission is to bring people together to create local solutions for a healthy planet. Acterra works in the areas of stewardship, education, and leadership. For more information about Acterra and their programs, please visit the
